The latest edition of the successful NUPOP music showcase is touching down in Pangnirtung, Nunavut this winter. NUPOP Pang will host workshops and performances from Feb. 28 to Mar. 1, 2024.

NUPOP is a touring music event that promotes and celebrates Inuit musicians. It features both emerging and established talent from Nunavut.

NUPOP Pang includes Looee, Joey Nowyuk and Leo Matthew Temela, who will perform at a finale concert at Community Hall on Mar. 1.

Looee is a renowned singer, songwriter and multi-disciplinary artist originally from Pangnirtung. She is an award-winning musician who blends traditional and contemporary Inuit music. Her recording of “Messiah/Complex” with Against The Grain Theatre and Toronto Symphony Orchestra was nominated for a 2022 Juno Award (Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble)).

Also hailing from Pangnirtung, Nowyuk is a chart-topping, award-winning indie-rock musician. He has topped the Indigenous Music Countdown, won the Qilaut songwriting contest and taken home an Indigenous Music Award. The singer-songwriter has put out two albums – his debut, Tumitit and his traditional songs cover album, Inuugama – with new music on the horizon.

Fresh off the three-day NUPOP South tour, Temela is a new hip hop artist. He recently completed the Qaggiavuut Artist In Residence Mentorship Program, an initiative that helps emerging artists learn about the music industry and professionally record music. He recently recorded his debut album, produced by GRAMMY®-award winner, Matt Snell, and Robbie Brett.

The three musicians will also host music workshops on Feb. 29. They will be joined by Sarah Elaine McLay and Tev Bourque who will run additional activities, including an open mic for community members to participate.

Each workshop will be limited to 15 people, on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Admission to all events is free.
