Nunavut-based rapper, singer, and musician Jacob Okatsiak has released his latest single, “22K,” from his upcoming debut album, Inuugapta. The song was released on February 3, 2023.
“22K” is a song about life and loss. Okatsiak dedicates the song to his father, who passed away during Inuugapta’s production. The verses of “22K” reflect on missing a loved one, while the chorus reminds listeners to make the most of the life they have left to live — all 22,000 days.
“From the first time he made me pick up an instrument, to releasing this album, my dad has been with me,” says Okatsiak. “The last time he watched over me was when I caught him watching me working on this album with a smile.”
The song features a verse and chorus harmonies from Shauna Seeteenak, fellow rapper and hip-hop artist from Baker Lake, Nunavut.
“22K” was written by Okatsiak, Seeteenak, Thor Simonsen, and Sarah Elaine McLay. The song was produced by Inuk rapper and producer, Hyper-T, along with Simonsen and McLay. It was released by the Iqaluit-based record label, Hitmakerz. Financial support was provided by the Government of Nunavut.
“22K” follows title track, “Inuugapta,” and “Fly High” as the third single off Okatsiak’s debut album. Inuugapta is set to be released in March 2023.
Originally from Arviat, Nunavut, Okatsiak has been developing his musical skills since he was a child. In addition to rapping and singing, he also plays instruments including the piano, guitar, drums, and violin, as well as makes his own beats.
In October 2022, Okatsiak performed at the NUPOP music showcase in Iqaluit, alongside fellow Hitmakerz musicians Looee, Joey Nowyuk, and Angela Amarualik. Earlier in the year, he won first place at the Arviat Talent Show.
Currently, Okatsiak is on tour across Nunavut with the Atii Angutiit men’s program.
“22K” is available now on all streaming platforms. Listen on Spotify. To be the first to learn about Jacob Okatsiak’s upcoming projects, follow him on Facebook and Instagram.
