Nunavut Pop Girl Dreams Big in New Single “I Wish I Was a King”

The single is the first from Aocelyn’s upcoming debut album “Lovely” set for release on Nov. 5, 2021.

Aocelyn (pronounced “aw-slin”) is a 22-year-old Inuk singer and rapper from Pond Inlet, Nunavut.

Aocelyn (whose real name is Jocelyn Arreak) is an extremely unique artist who has overcome many challenges, including extensive bullying throughout her life.

By making music, Aocelyn hopes to help others avoid the bullying that she experienced, while also making enough money to feed the world – starting with Nunavut, where food insecurity is commonplace.

Her life plans involve “making it big in music”, training as a priest, and eventually splitting her time between touring and performing exorcisms.

Discovered by the late Kelly Fraser, Aocelyn released her first music video “Adventure Awaits” in 2019.

Currently signed to the Iqaluit-based record label, Hitmakerz, Aocelyn plans to move “south” to Ottawa to receive musical training at Algonquin College and begin touring around the Arctic.

In September of 2021, Aocelyn attended the Hitmakerz Compound in Ottawa, where she recorded her soon-to-be-released music video for "I Wish I Was a King" – set for release on October 22, 2021.

“I Wish I Was a King” – as well as the rest of the “Lovely” album – was produced by Thor Simonsen (Kelly Fraser, Aasiva, Joey Nowyuk, Shauna Seeteenak, etc.) and mixed by Bardur Haberg (Girls' Generation, Namie Amuro, Kumi Koda, The Disney Channel, etc.). The single artwork was created by Bjorn Ulvedal Simonsen.

Financial support for the album and music video was provided by the Government of Nunavut and the Nunavut Film Development Corporation, respectively.

“Lovely” is available everywhere on Friday, November 5, 2021.
