TikTok influencer and pop artist from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Brenda Montana – also known by her username @inuksuk – has released her latest single, “Together As One.” This is the first single from her upcoming debut album, Qaujimagit

In “Together As One,” Montana’s dreamy vocal line, accompanied by a minimalist drone sound, sings a message about community and togetherness.

“I see a lot of people who are struggling and feel like they are alone, but they should know that there are people around them,” said Montana. “One day, I want everybody to forgive each other and to be there for each other because being together as one would honestly help [the world] a lot.”

The song is also an opportunity for Montana to pay homage to her Inuit culture. “Together As One” is a traditional Ayaya storytelling song – the first Montana has ever written.

“An Ayaya song is telling stories or sharing your thoughts,” she explained. “It’s also about learning about the land and the people.”

Montana recorded the song at the Hitmakerz Compound in Ottawa last September. Tev Bourque of Tev Sound (Birdie Whyte, John Carroll, Amanda Lowe) produced the track, while CD Baby distributed. The single was made possible with financial support from The Government of Nunavut.

Although this is Montana’s first official single from her debut album, she has already built a significant fanbase on TikTok for her singing and comedy videos. The now Iqaluit-based TikToker recently surpassed 120,000 followers and has gained over 2 million likes across all videos. Her top video – with 1.2 million views and over 260,000 likes – is a video of her throat singing to a trending banjo beat.

Montana continues to participate in popular TikTok trends, often adding an Indigenous spin to her videos. Additionally, she makes educational content, showcasing traditional Inuit food, discussing her experiences being Inuk, and answering questions.

Beyond TikTok, Montana’s musical accolades include a win at the Qilaut songwriting contest and a recent performance at the Arctic Sounds festival in Sisimiut, Greenland.

Together As One” is the first of three singles from Montana’s upcoming album, Qaujimagit. The album, set to release on August 26, 2022, is a collection of songs that Montana wrote for the important people in her life, including her friends, family, and community.
