Original, Inuktitut Christmas music – just in time for holidays
Chart-topping, Juno-nominated Inuk singer-songwriter releases her Inuktitut-language Christmas EP – her third release of the year!
On December 13, 2022, chart-topping, Juno-nominated Inuk singer-songwriter, Looee, will release a collection of 3 Inuktitut-language Christmas songs. The release marks the singer’s seventh album – including her third in 2022.
The album's first track, Qaumakuluit (pronounced “KAU-ma-ku-luit”), means “lovely lights” in Inuktitut and is about winter life in a northern community, where the nights are cold and dark, but where the lovely lights represent the love shared between community members and families.
The second track, Saanti Kalaasi (pronounced “san-tee ka-la-see”), means “Santa Clause”, and is about family gatherings and wondering what gifts Santa might be bringing.
The third track, Illuup Qaangani (pronounced “ee-loop hraa-nga-ni”), means “up on the housetop” and is about children’s excitement for Santa’s arrival.
The songs were all composed by Looee herself. They were recorded by Chris Coleman at Nuvu Music, and released by the Iqaluit-based record label, Hitmakerz. The album was made possible with financial support from the Government of Nunavut.
Looee is a prolific singer-songwriter, performing artist, accomplished writer, and seamstress. In addition, she is also the Executive Director of Qaggiavuut, a non-profit organization whose mission is to support the Nunavut artists and establish the territory’s first-ever performing arts centre.
In 2021, Looee was nominated for a Juno Award for her work with Messiah Complex. In 2022, she released a children’s album called I-pi-ti-ki, as well as an album of contemporary remixes of traditional songs called Maani. She was recently #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown with a single from the latter album called Mumik&alirunnuk (Haali Jaali).
Qaumakuluit is now available on all streaming platforms. To learn more about Looee, follow her on Facebook or check out www.looee.ca.
