JD Mike

Jordan Mike Aglak (“JD Mike”) is a hip-hop artist based in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. He began rapping in 2010 and in 2013 he self-published music online through SoundCloud. JD Mike started performing for audiences around 2016, participating in multiple Rap Battles in his community. In 2017, JD Mike went to Nunavut Hitmakerz workshop in Pond Inlet and was inspired to start writing and recording music.

JD Mike and his brother performed their original song, “Dreams To Reach”, at the local Nasivvik high school for a Suicide Prevention Walk. He believes that songwriting has helped him learn to express himself through music in a safe, healthy way. His songs include a wide range of authentic human emotions and address mental health with imagery of being lost in the dark and wanting to get out. JD Mike hopes that through listening to his songs, fans will understand some of the challenges he and other Inuit face.

In both 2021 and 2022, JD Mike won first place in Embrace Life Council’s Talent Show events. JD Mike planned to feature on the second Ajungi album, but the project was cancelled due to the pandemic. In 2022, he graduated from the Ajungi Mentorship Program, created by Hitmakerz and sponsored by FACTOR (the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings).

JD Mike is now officially launching his career in the music industry. He travelled to Iqaluit, Nunavut in September 2022 to work on recording his original songs with Ottawa-based producer, Tev Bourque of Tev Sound (Brenda Montana, Birdie Whyte, John Carroll, Amanda Lowe). In October 2023, JD Mike released his debut EP Rising Star on multiple platforms.

In addition to rapping and performing, JD Mike is also passionate about songwriting and beatmaking. He hopes to one day have a full-time career as a producer and work with other rappers on their projects.
