Jacob Okatsiak

Jacob Okatsiak, sometimes referred to as the “Drake of Nunavut”, is a hip-hop artist from Arviat, Nunavut. Okatsiak believes that making music allows him to speak authentically about not only his personal emotions and life experiences, but also the struggles and triumphs of those in his community as well.

In September 2022, Okatsiak released his first professional single, “Fly High”, leading up to the launch of, Inuugapta, his debut album, which is slated to come out in early 2023. “Inuugapta” is meant to represent the Inuit way of life from Okatsiak’s perspective. The Inuktitut word “Inuugapta”, means “we are people”. Okatsiak explained, “What I mean by this is we are people too, not any less and not any more even though we have more heavier accountability on some problems we are facing”. Okatsiak often collaborates with other Indigenous artists and is passionate about bringing Inuit voices to the fore. His lyrics are thought-provoking, and his performances are rhythmic and engaging.

Growing up, Okatsiak performed at his local church and learned to play many instruments, including drums, piano, and guitar. He has continued to develop his musical abilities, both on the stage as an artist and in the studio recording. Okatsiak was recently a part of NUPOP in Iqaluit, and has recently announced he will tour in communities across Nunavut with the Atii Angutiit men’s program this upcoming winter. In March 2023, Okatsiak will be performing at the Puvirnituq Snow Festival. In his attempts to have a positive impact on Northern communities, Okatsiak reflects on what his Grandma told him, “Start with what you have and do what you have to do in order to achieve your dreams”.
