Arctic Indie Rocker To Release New Music Video

Joey Nowyuk is an award-winning Inuit singer-songwriter based out of Pangnirtung, Nunavut. On August 28, 2020, he will release the single “Nalligigakku (Because I Love Her)” along with a beautiful music video featuring his hometown.

The single is a funky and fun summer love song, performed entirely in Inuktitut (with English subtitles). It was produced by Thor Simonsen, whose previous work includes prominent Inuit artists like Kelly Fraser, Aasiva, Ajungi, and more. It was co-produced by Dale Penner, whose previous work includes Nickelback and The Matthew Good Band.

[For media outlets, single/album previews are available on request.]

The music video was filmed on location in Pangnirtung by Atiigo Media, with help from many local actors and performers. It was produced by Hitmakerz, the Iqaluit-based record label (and social enterprise), whose mission is to “help Nunavummiut develop sustainable careers in the arts”.

The song is the first release off Joey’s debut album, Tumitit – meaning “your footsteps” in Inuktitut – which is set for release in 2021. Joey’s beat-heavy, guitar driven songs – some in Inuktitut, some in English – tell stories of his life in Nunavut, always shining a ray of optimism and hope throughout.

For several years running, Joey has won songwriting contests and performed around Nunavut. With the upcoming release of his debut album, the arctic indie rocker aims to join the ranks of celebrated Inuit artists such as Beatrice Deer and Elisapie in strengthening his people’s language and culture.

The album’s production was funded by the Government of Nunavut. The music video’s production was funded by the Nunavut Film Development Corporation.
