Chart-topping and award winning musician, Joey Nowyuk has released “Quviasupunga,” the latest song from his upcoming covers album, Inuugama

Originally released in 1997, “Quviasupunga” was written and performed by the late Charlie Adams. The song’s Inuktitut language title – which was also the title of Adams’ 1997 album – translates to “I’m happy” in English.

“Almost everyone from around [Nunavut] knows this song,” said Nowyuk. “It’s a very fun and happy song that probably everyone can sing along to.”

Nowyuk recorded the song last September at the Hitmakerz Compound in Ottawa. Dale Penner (Nickelback, Loverboy, SM6) produced and mixed the track, while Thor Simonsen (Kelly Fraser, Angela Amarualik, Shauna Seeteenak) executive produced. The single is distributed by CD Baby. Financial support for the song was provided by the Government of Nunavut.

“Quviasupunga” is the musician’s third single from Inuugama. The two previous singles – "Inuuqatigigakkit" and “Nunavut” – have been well-received by northern and southern audiences alike.

While he hails from Pangnirtung, Nunavut, Nowyuk has been making a name for himself globally. He recently performed at the Arctic Sounds festival in Sisimiut, Greenland and at the Folk On The Rocks festival in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. The first single from his album Tumitit, “Nalligigakku (Because I Love Her),” was translated into English, French, and Japanese.

Nowyuk has topped the Indigenous Music Countdown charts twice – once for “Nalligigakku (Because I Love Her)” and once for “Pray (Tussiaq).” He also has an Indigenous Music Award for Best Music Video for Novice Artists. Other accolades include being a three-time first place winner of the Qilaut songwriting contest and being featured at the imagineNATIVE film festival in Toronto.

Inuugama is an opportunity for Nowyuk to pay homage to the Inuit musicians who paved the way for him. It is set to be released on September 30, 2022, coinciding with National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“Quviasupunga'' is available now on all streaming services. Fans can pre-save Inuugama here.  To be the first to find out about Joey Nowyuk’s next releases, follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and at www.joeynowyuk.com.
