Award-winning Inuk singer, Angela Amarualik, released her second album, Uvannik on Saturday, October 22, 2022. (Listen to the album here.)

The word Uvannik means “by myself” in Inuktitut. Amarualik describes the album as a collection of songs about self-discovery, through life’s saddest and happiest moments.

Stylistically, she notes that the new album has a distinctly darker mood than her self-titled debut album.

“It’s the style: happy and sad, first-time and experienced, childlike and mature,” compares Amarualik. “It’s quite different, if you ask me.”

Uvannik was recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered by the Grammy Award-winning music producer Chris Birkett, whose previous work includes Buffy Sainte-Marie, Sinéad O'Connor, Sting, Quincy Jones, Peter Gabriel, and many other global superstars.

The album was released by the Iqaluit-based record label, Hitmakerz, and distributed by CD Baby. The project was made possible with financial support from the Government of Nunavut and Canada Council for the Arts.

Uvannik was originally set to be released in 2021, but was delayed due to the pandemic.

This is Amarualik’s first album since her debut was released back in 2018. The self-titled album received three nominations at the 2019 Indigenous Music Awards, including one win in the category of Best Inuit, Indigenous Language, or Francophone Album. That year, she also performed at the ceremony.

Amarualik’s other accolades include reaching number one on the Indigenous Music Countdown for her song, “Sapingillunga (I Won’t Give Up),” which was released on the 2019 Ajungi compilation album. She was also crowned Miss Igloolik in 2018.

Ahead of Uvannik’s release, Amarualik shared two singles. The first, “Summa Tamaani”, written by fellow Inuk songwriter, Joey Nowyuk, and recorded at the Hitmakerz Compound in Ottawa during the summer of 2021.

Most recently, Amarualik released her second single from the album, “Stranger of My Kind.” The song is about Amarualik’s experience moving from the small community of Igloolik, Nunavut and adjusting to life in the large city of Laval, Quebec.

“Summa Tamaani”, “Stranger of My Kind”, and the full album, Uvannik, are now available on all major music streaming platforms.
